Summary
Wave Energy describes how power flows through the body like a wave, originating from the ground, traveling through the legs and hips, up through the torso, and out through the arms to the point of contact. This sequential activation of body segments creates a whip-like effect that generates far more power than arm strength alone. Understanding Wave Energy explains why "hip power" works and how to generate maximum force efficiently.
The Principle
Core Concept: Power is rooted in the feet, generated in the legs and hips, and expressed through the fingertips. The body acts as a whip, with each segment accelerating the next.
The Wave Sequence: As described in Tai Chi literature, power:
- Originates from the ground through the feet
- Travels up through the legs and hips
- Releases through the arms
- Expresses at the fingertips
The Whip Analogy:
- Ideally, the body acts as a whip, with the lower portions moving before the upper portions
- The upper body should generate the movement of the upper portions
- Lower portions of the body shore the upper portions of the body
- In fact, the lower portions should generate the movement of the upper portions
Proper Wave Energy Mechanics
Improper Movement:
- Without Wave Energy, the body moves improperly
- The shoulder and hip rotate at the same time
- There is no whipping effect - only the body turning
Proper Sequence:
- Starting at rest
- Power generation begins by swinging the right knee forward and inward
- The knee turns the hip forward in the same fashion
- The knee returns to its original position while the whole body moves one body part at a time rather than all at once
The Complete Wave:
- The wave travels up the spine until it reaches the arm
- Notice that the forearm and elbow trail behind the shoulder
- The hand trails behind the elbow - given how much this telegraphs our intention to strike
- Note that this is not a technique but rather an example of Wave Energy motion
The Fist and Wave Energy
Wave Reaching the Hand:
- Finally, the wave reaches the hand
- Supposing that the fist remains relaxed enough so as not to consume the wave
- The energy continues through - in application this would be far closer to target
- Barring advanced chi work, the energy of the wave leaves the body and travels into air
Wave Energy Requirements:
- Wave Energy does not work for people who can strike or at least does not transfer far from the body
- Energy with power - but can be projected from the body or at least does not have to be conducted through a relatively relaxed fist
- The wave must be conducted through a relatively relaxed fist because tension will not pass through to target
- Maintain its strength - that said, if the striker remains relaxed, the wave can continue into the opponent's body
Tension and Wave Energy
Blocking the Wave:
- If we tense a hit part of the body, such as the shoulder, then that will be it
- The wave will be blocked just like hitting a wall
- Much like a wave of water - if I hold something, it blocks
Relaxation Connection:
- Mass and Relaxation point out: we must keep the upper body relaxed
- Tension will constrain some or all of the force generated by the Wave Energy before it can reach our target
- Hence one of the reasons I teach "hitting with purpose"
- The upper body, especially tension in the fist, that blocks the force before it is released
The Firehose Analogy:
- Think of the body as a cartoon firehose
- Shows what happens when we have proper Flow - the hose ripples slightly through different parts
- Through kicks of the blobs and hip - force travels up the hose through the body
- We see flickers of motion - like the hose does not pump the water running through its different parts
Advanced Wave Energy Concepts
Wave Cannot Straighten Spine:
- When the spine is trying to straighten, the spine consumes the quantity of force
- Unable to straighten, it absorbs force; the force will not be able to straighten the spine
- This means the spine will consume the force entirely
- This brings us back to issues of Posture
Heavy vs. Light:
- We want to be heavy when striking, bringing the wave to bear
- As we want our opponent to "fall" into the technique
- How do we "fall" forward without incurring "equal reaction" in our own bodies?
- As our weight centers at our hipsโmore or lessโwe do so with all of our weight centering from our center provided with all of our weight sitting on it
Wave Energy in Throws
Wave Sequence Demonstrates:
- A wave of force should begin at the lower body and move upwards
- It is possible to exercise the wave too far from the body
- The wave travels until it gets "hit" at this point and drops the force into the technique
Takedown Application:
- Wave energy facilitates throws by creating a void where the opponent used to stand
- The wave creates momentum that, with proper timing, takes the opponent down
- The thrower need not "throw" - the opponent has already initiated the process of falling
Connection to Other Principles
- Relaxation (relaxation): Tension blocks Wave Energy
- Mass (mass): Wave delivers heaviness to target
- Posture Dynamics (posture): Posture enables wave transmission
- Spinal Alignment (spinal-alignment): Wave travels through aligned spine
- Convergence (convergence): Wave Energy and Mass combine
- Kinetic Chain (kinetic-chain): Wave is the kinetic chain in action
Common Errors
- Arm-first striking - Generates wave backwards, loses power
- Simultaneous movement - Body moves as block, no wave effect
- Tension in shoulders - Blocks wave before it reaches arms
- Rigid fist throughout - Cannot conduct wave into target
- Disconnected hips - Wave starts in torso, missing leg power
- Over-rotating - Wave disperses before reaching target
Training Applications
Wave Isolation Drill:
- Practice moving only the knees, then only the hips, then only the shoulders
- Then chain them: knee turns hip, hip turns shoulder, shoulder moves arm
- Feel the sequential nature of the wave
Heavy Bag Wave Test:
- Strike the bag with arm power only
- Then strike with full Wave Energy
- Notice the difference in bag movement (should swing more from wave)
Partner Feedback:
- Have partner place hands on your shoulder while you generate wave from hips
- They should feel the wave arrive at the shoulder from below
- If they feel the shoulder initiate, wave is incorrect
